Why Dark Sky Lighting Is So Important

This is why Dark Sky lighting has become an increasingly important part of modern outdoor lighting design. Dark Sky initiatives encourage us to use light more thoughtfully, reducing unnecessary light pollution while still creating beautiful, functional outdoor spaces.

The Five Principles of Dark Sky Lighting

The International DarkSky Association and the Illuminating Engineering Society (IES) developed five simple principles to encourage more responsible outdoor lighting:

1. Make light useful – Every fitting should have a clear purpose.
2. Direct light where it’s needed – Use shielded fittings that aim light downwards and minimise light spill.
3. Keep light levels low – Use only the amount of light required to safely illuminate the space.
4. Control when lighting is used – Timers, motion sensors, and dimming controls ensure lights are only on when needed.
5. Choose warm colour temperatures – Selecting lighting that has a warm colour temperature and helps reduce blue light, creating a more comfortable environment for people while minimising the impact on wildlife.
