Why Blue Light and Sleep Are Closely Connected
Most of us know that a good night’s sleep is important, but few realise how much our home lighting can influence it.
One of the biggest factors is blue light. During the morning, blue light is essential. It helps stimulate cortisol production, making us feel awake, alert, and ready for the day. However, exposure to blue light in the evening, particularly from LED lighting and digital screens, can suppress melatonin production, making it more difficult to fall asleep and stay asleep.
Understanding the relationship between blue light and sleep is one of the simplest ways to create a healthier home.
Choosing the Right Colour Temperature
Reducing blue light doesn’t mean switching your lights off earlier. Instead, it means choosing the right colour temperature throughout the day.
As evening approaches, lighting should gradually become warmer, ideally moving towards 1800K, similar to candlelight. This reduces blue light and creates a calming environment that supports your body’s natural circadian rhythm.
By allowing your lighting to change with the time of day, you’re working with your body’s biology rather than against it.

Lighting Design That Supports Wellbeing
Hotels, restaurants, and spas have long understood the importance of warm, low-level lighting. It doesn’t just create atmosphere, it helps people relax.
The same principles can be applied at home. Combining warmer colour temperatures with layered lighting creates spaces that feel more comfortable while supporting better sleep, improved wellbeing, and healthier daily routines.
