Our Professional Lighting Design Practical Day brought together 20 curious and committed participants from a wonderfully diverse mix of backgrounds, including interior design, architecture, glass manufacturing, and those who simply love light and what it can do. The day began in the best possible way: good coffee, breakfast, and great conversation. From there, we moved into a series of focused lectures that explored light not just as a design tool, but as a fundamental influence on how we experience space, comfort, and wellbeing.

A key part of the day was stepping outside to reconnect with natural light. By observing, measuring, and discussing daylight in real time, we were able to clearly demonstrate its power and potential—both visually and scientifically. Understanding natural light, how it moves, how it supports health, and how it informs design decisions, is essential to creating buildings that feel good to be in. Seeing these principles in action helps anchor theory in reality, and it sparked some brilliant discussion among the group.

Back indoors, the afternoon focused on practical application. We worked through the tools, techniques, and design thinking that allow lighting designers and built-environment professionals to shape thoughtful, layered, and human-centred spaces. From interiors to architecture, the emphasis was on designing with intention—using light to support function, mood, and long-term comfort. It was a day full of learning, shared insight, and enthusiasm, and we left energised by the quality of engagement and the collective appreciation for just how powerful light can be when it’s properly understood.
